Frequently Asked Questions: Host

Here are a few of the questions we get asked most by people who are thinking of becoming a Host. If you have anything you want answered, get in touch on info@gocambio.com and we’ll drop you an email and put the answer up on this page.

Q

Is my Guest a qualified teacher?

A

Not always, but we certainly have a few fully trained teachers and tutors in our community. A quick look through a guest’s profile will tell you all you need to know about your guest’s credentials. While most of our members come from all sorts of other backgrounds, our Express Cambio Course and the upcoming 10 Hour Cambio Expert course will give Cambio Guests everything they need to teach their native language and skills. Our Guests are able to share their skills no matter what background they have. Set up a video call before your Guest arrives and find out what they can do!

Q

What if my Guest isn’t very good?

A

Here’s where a little patience goes a long way. Not all of our Guests are used to tutoring, even in a cosy home, so they might need a little time before they can really begin to shine. Give them some encouragement as even the most skilled people might find it tricky to teach their skill at first. This is an experience where both you and your Guest share what you both know and begin to learn through doing! If you feel your Guest’s skill isn’t quite as good as you hoped it will be a shame but don’t let it put a damper on your time together. Maybe you can both help each other out at improving the skill in the end and keep building a new friendship with someone from abroad.

Q

What happens if I want my Guest to stay longer?

A

It’s great that you’d like to keep your Guest for a little longer, be sure and ask them if they would like to do the same! We are sure they would be very pleased to stay in your home for a while more. Always keep travel schedules in mind though and be understanding if your Guest can’t stay around. Maybe arrange for another cambio some other time too...

Q

How much time will my Guest spend with me each day?

A

We usually encourage Guests to allow for two hours a day with their Host to get all the teaching and skills exchanging they need done. This is only a guideline and you can both agree to have less or more hours depending on what you both want to do. Want a day to yourself? Let your Guest know. Your Guest wants a day to travel? Then let them get out there and live and breath your country.

Q

What is the offer template?

A

This is something that helps speed up organizing a cambio and can be found where you edit your profile. This is where you can say what you would like from a Guest and what you’d like to give to a Guest. You mention here what your home is like, what your family is like, and what your hometown is like to. Make sure your Guest knows how awesome a cambio with you will be!

Q

Can I trust a Guest in my home?

A

You might be a bit nervous about taking on a stranger into your home, especially if it’s for the first time. For peace of mind read a Guest profile carefully before you accept an offer as well as read their endorsements and reviews. Keep an eye out for people who have been verified. Meet them on Skype, ask them about themselves before you agree to anything. In the end always trust your gut when you welcome someone new into your home.

Q

Does a Guest need a bedroom of their own?

A

Everyone likes having their own little bit of space. Your Guest won’t need the height of luxury but try and set aside a room for them so they can set themselves down in a comfortable spot. You will get a lot more responses if you mention on your profile that you have a spare room to offer.

Q

Is there anything else I should know?

A

Having a good time and meeting new people is at the heart of cambioing. So make sure you take the time to just relax and have some fun with the new friend you've invited into your home.
