A GUIDE TO

TRAVELLING IN
Morocco

A North African country known for its buzzing markets, ornate craftworks and for touching both the Saharan desert and the Mediterranean sea. A homestay in Morocco is going to be a place lying amongst a diverse and lively culture.

What skills are in demand?

English and Spanish may be quite popular thanks to Morocco’s closeness to Gibraltar and Spain. Some skills in construction such as woodwork, metalwork and crafts might be useful to a Moroccan host. A Moroccan host might like to you to help them practice a musical instrument too, or even join in making music together.

Top 3 places to cambio:

Each of Morocco’s greater cities has within it a Medina (old city) which is often where you will find most of the more interesting sights to see such as the souks and performance artists. Always be aware of persistent vendors, or otherwise be ready to haggle!

Fez

Located in the Moroccan interior, Fez is an ancient imperial city that once served as the centre of Moroccan culture and economy. The city is full of great fortifications left over by French, Marinid and Saadian armies in the city. The great Borj Nord and Borj Sud Forts and the Marinid Tombs are all examples of ancient sites still found in the city. You might also want to visit the tanneries of Fez and see how leather is dyed and treated before it is shipped off to be sold. You may even find some local produce in the nearby markets of the Medina.

Marrakech

Another of the old Imperial cities, Marrakech is also famous for its marketplace and the medina. You can also take a camel ride over the Palmeraie Oasis nearby and watch the palm fronds swaying in the breeze. In the evening travel to the Djemaa el Fna Square for its musicians and performance arts. Go into the city to see the Saadian tombs and the accompanying gardens outside or perhaps see the Majorelle gardens and Berber Museum. The El Bahia Palace is a fantastic example of Moroccan architecture.

Rabat

The coastal capital of Morocco, Rabat is a city of Mediterranean beaches, colourful boulevards, high rise offices and ancient castles. You can visit the Kasbah of the Oudaias with its colourful blue tinged walls here. Pass by the Royal Mausoleum, the Palace or the Old Medina on a trip back into Rabat’s history. You can also see the splendour of nature overtaking mankind as the ruins of Chellah now stand overrun by beautiful white storks. If you have time, you can travel to nearby Casablanca to see the King Hassan II Mosque.

Top 3 Things to do on cambio:

Morocco’s variety in environments and things to do remain some of its biggest draws. Tourists come from all over not only to experience the towns but also the hot Moroccan countryside.

Watersports in the Mediterranean

Morocco is quickly becoming a destination for fans of watersport everywhere. Its northern towns and villages are becoming some of the best destinations in all of Africa to hit the water. There is plenty of options whether it be for some swimming, surfing, windsailing, snorkelling or even just diving. The warm Moroccan springs and Autumns provide the perfect time for a trip to the coastline.

Saharan adventures

Just because there is far less water doesn’t mean you should avoid going to the Sahara during your stay in Morocco! Thrill seekers are looking to the desert more and more to get their adrenaline rush. Whether it be by going on a cross-dune drive by 4x4 or buggy, going sandboarding down the many great Saharan dunes, or even going for a trek by horse for the easier, more solid terrain, or by camel when you want to get a feel of the real Sahara.

Bargaining in the Souks

Part of the fun of going to Morocco is walking through the souks and interacting with the vendors there. Most of the time you will be getting anything for a cut price anyway compared to prices in other countries, however you should definitely play the bargaining game. This is not only a good pastime, but it also means you won't be inflating prices for regular Moroccans who may also shop here. If you are not interested be polite, say no and keep on walking along. Do not think of it as shopping in a conventional sense, but rather a lighthearted duel of wits with a little more than pride at stake. Who knows, you may even find some cool little items along your way too.
